This is the real problem with Ford Rangers…

The problem with Ford Rangers is not what most people think. It’s not that it’s not a Toyota and it’s not that it leaks oil. (Yup, we’ve all heard those jokes) The common problem on Ranger PX 2.2 and PX 2.3 year models 2011 – current is the springs. No jokes. These Rangers tend to break leafs in the rear leaf pack. 

For some reason there is a defect in the design that make the rear leaf springs vulnerable. Especially if you are loading your bakkie or overlanding there is a higher probability of the springs breaking. Corrugations and dirt roads also put extra load on the springs which could cause the problem to occur sooner. If a leaf breaks in the spring pack it could dislodge your axle or damage the shock. 

Sometimes people don’t even realise it’s broken until more damage is done, so it’s important to visually inspect the leaf springs regularly if you do drive this series of Ranger. If the vehicle is sagging to one side it may also be because of a broken spring. You may hear a rattle and you won’t be able to load the vehicle with same weight.

Options to correct a broken leaf spring or prevent the problem: Adding a leaf to your existing springs if not broken could save it from breaking in the first place. If there’s a broken leaf you can replace the leaf pack or replace the leaf in the leaf pack and add another leaf. Adding a leaf makes the ride harder and more bumpy. 

Replacing the OE leafs with parabolics is also and option and it improves ride comfort. If you do upgrade the leafs to parabolics you need to upgrade the shocks as well because pararbolics lift the vehicle. Parabolics give better articulation and suspension travel.

Ford Rangers are great bakkies and many of my customers have them. Just be aware of this possible suspension problem and keep an eye on your vehicle. Give me a shout if you have any concerns or need help with anything.
